A driveway fails from underneath. So that is where we start.
Sunken tracks and loose blocks nearly always mean a thin sub-base, the layer of crushed stone under the surface. Ours goes in at 150 mm, compacted in two layers, on every job.
Free survey and a fixed written quote
We measure up, check levels and drainage, and send an itemised price within two working days. No charge, no obligation.
Dig out to firm ground
The old surface and soft ground come out. Waste leaves site in licensed skips the same day.
Typical dig depth 245 mm
Membrane and sub-base
A geotextile membrane keeps the stone and the soil apart. Crushed stone goes on top and is compacted in two layers.
150 mm Type 1 stone (Type 3 where it must drain)
Edging, drainage and sand bed
Kerbs are set in concrete to lock the edges. Channel drains go in, then a levelled bed of sharp sand.
35 mm sharp sand · fall of 1 in 60
Lay the surface
Blocks are laid, cut in at the edges, jointed with kiln-dried sand and compacted with a plate.
60 mm blocks · 45° herringbone
Clean down and hand over
We wash down, walk the job with you, and leave your 10-year guarantee certificate and care notes.

The neighbours usually ask who did it.
Turned up when they said, dug far deeper than the last firm did, and left the road cleaner than they found it. Two neighbours have booked them since.
The quote was the price we paid. They found an old soakaway halfway through and sorted it without any drama or extra cost.
We went for resin after seeing the samples against our brick. Three winters on and it looks the same as the day it was laid.

Asked on most surveys.
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Usually not. In England, a front driveway over 5 m² only needs planning permission if the surface is impermeable and rainwater runs off to the road. We either lay a surface that drains, or fall the drive to a border or soakaway inside your boundary. Conservation areas and listed buildings have their own rules, and we check before we quote.
What about a dropped kerb?
The pavement belongs to the highway authority, so a dropped kerb needs a licence from your council and has to be built by an approved contractor. We help with the application and co-ordinate the work with your driveway.
How long will it take?
Most family driveways take three to six working days. Resin bound needs a dry day to lay and around a day to cure before you drive on it.
What does the guarantee cover?
Ten years on the groundwork and the surface: sinking, spreading edges and loose blocks. It is in writing and stays with the house if you sell.
When do I pay?
Nothing until materials arrive on site. The balance is due when you have walked the finished job with us and are happy with it.
Do you work through the winter?
Yes. Block paving, tarmac and gravel go down in most weather. Resin cannot be laid in rain or below about 5°C, so we book those jobs with a spare day.
Tell us about your driveway.
We come out, measure up and send a fixed written quote within two working days. The survey takes about 30 minutes and costs nothing.
