Do I need permission to cut a tree?

Sometimes — check Tree Preservation Orders and conservation area status before pruning or removing a tree.

Tree Preservation Orders

A TPO protects specific trees or groups of trees. Work usually needs consent from the relevant local authority unless an exemption applies.

Conservation areas

Even if a tree is not individually protected, notice may be needed in a conservation area. Checking first avoids delays and mistakes.

What information helps

Urgent safety work

If a tree is immediately dangerous, safety comes first, but evidence and local-authority guidance still matter. Ask before guessing.

Survey request

Tell us about the tree and we’ll suggest the next step

Share the location, what you are worried about and whether you have photos. We will usually start by deciding whether photo advice is enough or whether a site survey is needed before quoting.
